In recent years, a style has emerged that is growing in popularity, especially in the workplace. It’s called “Smart Casual”. The term can be kind of confusing, since is a mix of two words that are opposites of each other! So what is “Smart Casual” style and how do you wear it? Let’s define what “Smart Casual” is, where you wear it and look at a capsule wardrobe with several outfits.
Smart Casual is a blend of two styles. The “Smart” is refers to business workwear style and the “Casual” refers to everyday, comfortable style. Smart Casual gives you more flexibility with your outfits and is suitable to wear more places that just the workplace.
Pieces that are slightly less formal than abusiness-casualor business-professional dress code. Smart casual is much more elevated and put-together than just casual wear.
Spring Business Casual Capsule
Your answer depends on how often you will wear the outfits. If you need an outfit just to wear to an event, then you can pull a few pieces from your closet to put together an outfit using the example pieces listed above. But, if you plan on wearing Smart Casual outfits to your workplace throughout the week, you will need to create a wardrobe.
Number of pieces to include: The amount of clothes and shoes to include in your wardrobe again depends on how often you will wear your outfits. To have a Smart Casual wardrobe to wear to work everyday, you should include 20-25 pieces for a season.
Black or Navy:Black and navy are the two most commonly used colors in capsule wardrobes, but you can use other neutral colors as your base color, like brown, gray, tan or camel. Black is an all-around great base color to use because it goes with so many other colors. If you would rather not use black, then navy goes well with several other colors as well.

Start with your layers first, since those will be the statement pieces of your outfits. Choose tailored blazers, sweater blazers, trench coat and structured coats/jackets.

As with any capsule wardrobe, I tried towhittlethe pieces down to my favoriteessentials. Before I went into blogging full-time, I worked 2 ten hour shifts a week in a cardiology office. As a nurse practitioner, I had to look professional, but those weren’t the types of clothes I wore in my mom life the other 5 days of the week.
When starting a capsule wardrobe for work I had to think what of the item I re-wore the most in the office? For me it was a simple pair of work appropriate pants. Is the term slacks still current? That’s what my mom calls what I term “work pants”. I would recommend finding a pair of pants you love and wearing them as much as possible. Anyone worrying that you wear the same pants on repeat has too much time on their hands if you ask me.
A flattering dress is also something you can restyle for the office several different ways. What I love about a dress is that it’s one and done! No coordinating a top into the mix.
Classic Work Capsule Wardrobe 2022 — Lily Chérie
Below you will find some office appropriate dresses that would be good for summer. The white shift dress below also come in black. Black is the safest office “color” because it’s year round and easy to accessorize, but I prefer lighter colors for summer. While you almost never see me in black these days, I wore it regularly when I had an office job.
Regarding pants, the options below are all size-inclusive and available in regular, petite and long size options. I personally prefer a slimmer fitting trouser with an ankle fit for the office. I think this style looks great with both flats and heels, and pairs well with most tops. While I like a wide leg trouser, I think they look best worn with heels, and I wasn’t always up for being on my feet all day in heels. I also think wide leg pants look good with a more fitted top and since my office got catering almost everyday I tended to wear more billowy blouses to conceal my after lunch food baby.
Lastly, as more offices are becoming more casual with their dress code, I love a good pair of flare jeans. They look awesome styled with a pair of heels.

I asked my Facebook crew if they were allowed to wear sandals at work and the majority of gals said “no”. My office required closed toe shoes, and I would repeat the same 2 or so pairs each season. At home I wear sandals or sneakers in the summer so I stuck to the basics in the office.
Is your office cold? Mine always fluctuated so much. Depending on where you live, layering pieces such as blazers and cardigans are essential. I added a cute neutral blazer as well as this cropped v-neck cardigan in the mix if where you live is still cold in the mornings.
While you want a few basic tops, this is definitely are place where you can easily swap in some trendier pieces as well. The classic button down shirt is definitely a workwear staple.

A big and spacious work bag is essential to an office capsule wardrobe. You can’t go wrong with either a classic black and brown tote, but having one in each color will give you ease of mind that you will always have a bag that goes nicely with your outfit.

Similar to the benefits of a uniform [as workwear is essentially a uniform], capsules help keep your wardrobe to a minimum and removes the constant decision fatigue that comes with having an overabundance of clothes, shoes, etc.
Random story time: When I was in elementary school I was forced to wear a uniform [and I say ‘forced’ because uniforms were optional at my school but my mom made me wear them and I was pretty much one of three kids in the ENTIRE school wearing uniforms] and HATED them with a passion. Like HATED them. I spent years arguing and begging not to wear a uniform. Little rebel me would even wear an entirely different outfit underneath so I could change at school and wear ‘regular’ clothes. I was so scarred I didn’t wear navy and white together for over 10 years after that [no joke]. So the irony that I now create capsules and love workwear is not lost on me lol.

The items I’ve chosen for the business are the items I consider to be essential staples for creating just about any business casual outfit. The items here an easily be mixed and matched a number of ways, and dressed up or down [by adding or removing a blazer, wearing heels vs loafers etc].
The capsules I create hopefully provide you some inspiration, but don’t feel like you need to copy it to a T! If you prefer skirts or dresses, you could easily switch out the pants or add a skirt or dress. You can also incorporate different colors or patterns to switch things up [but if you’ve been following me for a while you know I love my neutrals].
